Coast to Coast with Cory Stem - No Place Like Home

No Place Like Home

This week’s action saw me in Tucson, Arizona.  This was great because I knew that there were some big fans of FMX there and it’s only about an hour and a half from my house.  That meant I got an extra day to sleep in my own bed and did not have to do the horrible day after flight home.

The fans in Tucson were great and the shows reflected that.  I don’t think that fans recognize the effect they have on the quality of the show they receive.  Some cities I have been to, the crowd is “too cool” or in other words thinks they know everything about FMX and we aren’t going to surprise them.  They are afraid if they get too excited or show any emotion, it would make them look uncool or something is the only thing I can guess.  For those fans I say- watch the riders when they are sitting and checking out their buddies runs.  They get crazy down there.  So it is okay for you the cool fan to get crazy too.
Like I said- no trouble like that in the Old Pueblo.

The riders say it all the time.  They are professionals and will always give their best even if the fans don’t seem to deserve it- but turn up the energy in the building and that is when the magic happens.  Suddenly riders who swore they would never do a Bar Hop again are flying between the grips like a ninja.  Let’s face it.  FMX riders are adrenaline junkies and show offs.  They are performers just as much as athletes and if you want a big show- they need big noise.    I just get pumped and start running around like a madman when the crowd is pumped.

This weeks question is a technical one from a young fmx’r named Jason E. from Chula Vista, California.  Here it goes: “I am 12 and have a CR80.  I am getting pretty good at riding it, have raced too.  I like freestyle and like jumping big jumps.  What should I do to my suspension?”

Great question Jason.  Since it is early in the morning, I will answer this (most riders are still asleep or are ignoring me!).  First, make sure your stock stuff is working to it’s full potential.  If you have any leaks (or did- if it just stopped, it is out of oil), nicks, looseness or has been a long time since oil servicing- get that done first. Most suspension tuning is dependent on the rider skill, weight, style, preference and type of riding where stock suspension in proper working order may work just fine.  If you are already at that point it is time to upgrade.  Preferably you will want to find a local to set up your suspension.  The problem with mail order companies is service after the sale.  If you send your forks half way across the country, that person cannot help you fine tune it at the track.  You live in southern California, so finding someone nearby is easy for you-take advantage of it.  Most FMX riders set up for freestyle do not work well for track use.  They set up stiff with higher compression valving and set rebound according to personal preference.  Rebound is important more for the take off, while compression works on take off and more importantly landing.

Sounds like you are on the right track Jason.  Swag coming your way!

You on the computer reading this- want some free stuff?  Of course you do! Get your question into fmxannouncerman@live.com and maybe I will pick yours!  Until then- a week off for me then it is Idaho!  See you there!
