Friday - 7:30pm Thomas
Alves experiences, "The Wheeling Feeling"The
Westbanco Area in Wheeling, West Virginia was the place to be on this night as
the IFMA FMX Tour was on hand to capture the moment. Along with the FMX regulars
, Pat and Phil Smage were on hand to display there Moto Trial Skills, seventeen
year old, Pat is the current AMA National Moto Trials Champion and his brother
Phil is a Moto Trials wiz, and the two-time Winter X snow skate Champ as well.
The Hell On Wheels BMX Bunch were also in attendance, featuring youngster, Corey
Barglar, who ended their performance with a front flip! Also, congratulations
go out to Trish and Mike Robbins of St Clairsville, Ohio, for winning the KISS
FM/X-treme Motorcycle Group, "Ride In Style" contest.
The crowd
was eager for qualifying, and they weren't disappointed as Scott Hanlon, with
his mom and dad in attendance, came out with his best run of the season and scored
an 88.7 with several seat grab variations. Scotty remained in the top qualifying
spot until, Mr. Nasty, Slade Waltman, came out and busted big enough to take the
lead from Hanlon with an 89.5. "High Roller", Ben Veyna was next in the
lineup, Ben challenged Waltman and had a pretty equal run, but after conferring
with the judges, Veyna did one less trick and was scored an 89.1. The final qualifying
run belonged to "T-Money", Thomas Alves, on his Troy Lee Designs sponsored
YZ 250, Thomas started with a combo package
Backflip-Heel Clicker and that
lead the fans to explode into a frenzy, from there, Thomas rode smooth and was
the top qualifier of the evening with a 91.1.
In the main event, Hanlon
was first up, and this was the first time in the main event this season, and on
his second jump, he over-jumped the landing and went into the safety tuff blocks.
At that point he finished his run, but it was obvious he was a little frazzled,
not to mention he finished with some bent bars, score
88.7. Enter Ben Veyna,
who swept the FMX P-I-G competition, did the most tricks, including one of his
signature tricks, Holy Rock Solid, a nice run and score of 90.8 Slade was next,
he came up one-half point shy of Veyna's run and offered some advice to the judges.
Finally, it was between Veyna and the final rider, Thomas Alves. T-Money took
center stage banging out a backflip-heel clicker, backlip-nac nac, backflip-no
hander, and a backflip-whip, it was about that time the Hot Seat turned cold for
Veyna. Alves received a standing "O" from the appreciative crowd and
won the judges favor with a 94.7. FMX Wheeling continues Saturday night with more
high-flying excitement! Mikey 1.

Saturday - 7:30pm
The second round of
FMX in Wheeling, West Virginia, took place on Saturday, February 16, 2008. The
show was held because of a huge line of fans that were eager to check out the
"Big Show" at the Wesbanco Arena. It was worth the wait as the riders
did not disappoint the very excitable crowd. The Hell on Wheels BMX Stunt Team,
Brad, "Big Daddy", Corey, and Grant did an amazing back flip train,
much to the crowds' appreciation and the Smage brothers were on time with some
excellent synchronization in the Moto Trials exhibition on there 160 pound, Shercos.
The qualifiers on this particular evening were taken by Thomas Alves, who backflipped
his way into the hearts of the lower Ohio Valley as well as the judges! The battle
for second was between "High Roller", Ben Veyna and "Mr. Nasty,
Slade Waltman, Veyna would take the second, due to his number of tricks (9), in
sixty seconds. Rounding out the top four positions, would be newcomer, Justin
Stoltzfus, "The Squirrel Master", of Honeybrook, Pennsylvania.
The stage was set for an exciting main event! The Squirrel Master was the first
up, and he had a great run, considering it was his first main event, and his first
show was the previous evening. He said that he enjoyed being in Wheeling and had
a lot of appreciation for the crowd, he scored an 89.5. Next out of the chute,
Slade Walton, who spent some spare time earlier in the day, scaling the building
to check for leaks!! More in the pits about that! Slade had his best run of the
season and the largest Kiss of Death of the evening, almost taking out the scoreboard!
Slade finished with 91.3 and took the Hot Seat! Ben Veyna, the High Roller had
his chance, however, on the way to his second trick, he mis-shifted and had to
turn around before the take-off and that put him behind in his trick-count, so
the judges awarded him a lower score 88.0. Finally, it was up to T-Money, who
came out and went big, with a barrage of backflip-combos, which solidified his
weekend sweep! Congrats to Thomas, and thanks for playing! See you in Birmingham
in two weeks! Mikey1.
